Whilst a child Master Danny trained and competed in Judo at schools level and at 11 years old locally in Shotokan Karate and participated in London Youth Games - Crystal Palace & semi-contact tournaments. In that time and with a disqualification in a bout for knocking down an opponent with a body punch, an art more full contact was sought.
In 1985 and at the same time training as a fighter in London ABA's amateur boxing under the guidance of Peter Kent at Lonsdale Gym Master Danny gained Thai Boxing experience there initially as well with Bill Judd of KO Gym. The early martial arts passion and natural boxing ability seemed to fuse together perfectly in Thai Boxing, hence its attraction. From 1987 he then continued Thai Boxing training to fight at a novice and c class level. With the desire to carry on practicing and improving whilst studying he began Instruction at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston with a few enthusiastic
students. It soon turned into the most successful martial arts society at the University with many student members - it was UK's Universities first MuayThai Society. At the same time he also worked as a bouncer to pay his way through study. After completing his degree Master Danny continued teaching small groups and individuals (especially Trevor McCook, Errol Reid, Mike Slater, Dips Dhillon, Jay Dhillon) from 1988 thereafter forming a club at West Middlesex Hospital Social Club in 1989.
Having to move because of housing development, Seconds Out Boxing Club at Ealing Northern Leisure Centre, Sudbury HIllwas the next club gym. Although the club was becoming popular, Master Danny felt there was much more to learn about authentic Muaythai as trained in Thailand by the best fighters and traditional Thai Martial Arts to be therefore able in turn to pass it on to existing and future students.
Previously known as Dan's KO Gym, RukThai Camp was established by Master Danny & was blessed and given its name after personal tuition and attaining Official Kru Teacher Qualification by GrandMaster Woody in Manchester and the Royal Thai Government Ministry of Education and Dept. of Physical Education Bodies in1994.
'RukThai' has at least three major meanings:
first is 'Ruk' pronounced 'Rook' multiple meaning of 'Attack" 'Invade' "Forward", 'Advance' and second pronounced 'Ruck' is a love and passion for the Thai culture and what it embraces, which as part of their heritage, includes MuayThai - and
third 'Mak Ruk' is 'Thai Chess' & particularly the 'Check' move, thinking with strategy attacking, defending, countering in Thai Chess which MuayThai fighting, just like chess, is exactly that at a high level, a real mind game!
We are very proud to have a camp name associated with such relevant, traditional and deep meanings for our Art of Muaythai and moreover honoured for it to have root from a world renowned GrandMaster.
